Puerto Rico: Exploring Transnational Processes

Students on this program have the opportunity to witness and participate in transnational processes. Through readings, lectures, site visits, and service learning projects that link Puerto Rico to Chicago, students explore the contexts from which the Puerto Rican nation emerges. The program integrates service learning in Puerto Rico and in Chicago, utilizing the Steans Centers "Bringing it Home" model as a means to examine the direct political, economic and cultural connections between Puerto Rican communities on the island and Puerto Rican communities in Chicago.

Students participating in this program earn 8 credit hours for 2 courses. Dr. Jacqui Lazu, Assistant Professor of Modern Languages, teaches a course during the Spring quarter on Puerto Rican Culture and Language; Marisol Morales, Associate Director of the Steans Center, teaches CSS 390/LST 300 Transnational Communities: Puerto Rico during the Fall quarter.
