French Language Studies in Paris

In conjunction with the Institute for the International Education of Students (IES), DePaul offers an opportunity for advanced French majors and minors to study in Paris. Students have the option of studying either during the academic year or during the Winter and Spring quarters in this beautiful city.

This rigorous program allows juniors and seniors to enroll in courses at the IES Paris Center and one of the following institutions: l’Institut Catholique, l’Université de Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV), l’Université de Paris VIII (Vincennes-Saint Denis), the Ecole des dirigeants et créateurs d’entreprise (EDC), the Ecole de Psychologues Praticiens, Académie de la Croix Nivert, or l’Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris/Alfred Cortot. All courses are taught in French so that the students can increase verbal and written proficiency. Students studying for an entire year may also apply for a credit-bearing internship with a French company or organization.

The IES Paris Center is located on rue Daguerre, one of the city's oldest market streets near the Montparnasse train station and within walking distance of the Latin Quarter. The neighborhood surrounding the Center is a lively residential area, bustling with cafés, restaurants, theaters and shops. IES Paris is committed to encouraging students' integration into the French community and to developing their understanding of the French language and people.

COURSES

Students are enrolled in at IES Paris Center and one of the French universities for five courses per semester. All courses are taught in the target language.

DePaul students must register for a minimum total of 24 DePaul credit hours during the Winter/Spring and 36 credit hours for the academic year. Each course taught at the IES Center will count as 6 DePaul credits and the courses taken at French universities will each count as 4.5 DePaul credit hours. The IES Paris Center teaches courses in:

Art History

Business

Cinema

French Language

Economics

History

Literature

Political Science

Social & Behavioral Sciences

Sociology

Theater

While the course listings for other French universities are not published until after students arrive in Paris, students may consult past listings as guides. IES classes begin immediately after an on-site orientation.

Students participating in this program during the Spring of their senior year should be aware that overseas grades may not receive their degree conferral until August. While the Study Abroad office will do everything they can to expedite the process, we usually do not receive the overseas transcripts early enough for a June graduation conferral.

Circumstances, such as an unexpected event abroad or a curriculum change at a host institution, may require DePaul University to make changes to the program. DePaul University reserves the right to cancel or alter programs and courses without notice.

EXCURSIONS

IES Paris sponsors a number of field trips that complement formal classroom learning. Six one-day field trips are organized each semester and usually include visits to the châteaux of Fontainebleau and Vaux-le-Vicomte, located near Paris, Auvers sur Oise and Giverny. Students may choose to participate in two of the six sponsored trips. The cost of these excursions is included in the program fee, but no refunds are given to students who do not participate. Optional excursions may be arranged at a later date and students who participate in these will share the cost.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

Housing contributes greatly to the quality of the overall study abroad and cultural experience. The program arranges housing in French homes, which are screened and approved by an IES Paris staff member. Students indicate on a questionnaire any needs or preferences, which IES will accommodate as best as possible. Participants take a daily breakfast and three evening meals per week with the host. Other meals can be taken at university cafeterias and inexpensive restaurants in the area.
