Diverse Studies in an Australian Metropolis

DePaul’s Study Abroad Program is pleased to offer its program to Melbourne, Australia. Students have the opportunity to study at Monash University during its second semester (DePaul’s Summer Session II and Fall quarter). This program was originally designed to provide science students an opportunity to study overseas for a semester while taking courses in their majors. All majors will find an array of courses suitable to their academic careers, however, as Monash offers an extensive range of subjects in addition to science courses.

Melbourne is a vibrant city of over 3 million people, located on the shores of Phillip Bay in the state of Victoria in southern Australia. It is the second largest city in the country and boasts an interesting history and rich ethnic mixture. Activities in and around Melbourne abound, including attending sporting and cultural events, penguin watching, windsurfing, snow skiing, touring the wine country and exploring the coast.

Founded in 1958, Monash University has grown quickly to become a world leader in scientific research and a member of the prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities in Australia. The Go8 undertake 70% of all research in Australian universities, and are recognized for their excellence in teaching, learning and research. Monash is also one of the most internationalized, with two of its eight campuses located in other countries - South Africa and Malaysia.

COURSES

Participants will be required to take a minimum number of credits while they are at Monash University. The only required course for the program is ANT 390 "Contemporary Australia" that includes several excursions off-campus. They will also take 18 Monash credit points of additional courses at Monash University, which is equivalent to 18 DePaul credit hours. Although some Monash courses (or units) can range from 4 to 12 credit points, most of the courses are 6 credit points each. Therefore, students will usually take four courses while they are at Monash University, including the "Contemporary Australia" course.  Monash University does not have internship opportunities for study abroad or exchange students.

Monthly food stipends will be provided to each student. Participants may choose to make their own food in the dormitory cooking facilities or eat in the cafeteria, the student center on campus, or at one of the nearby restaurants.

In addition to DePaul tuition for 24 credits, costs include a specific program fee.  For updated information on specific program expenses, click here:

For this program, the fee includes housing in the residence halls, a monthly stipend for food, transportation from the airport to campus, a local transportation pass, study abroad health insurance, and orientation programs.

Students must also plan their budgets to cover airfare, passport and visa fees, any additional personal travel in the country, supplies, textbooks and personal expenses.
