International Programs / Study Abroad

London, England

Liberal Arts and Commerce Studies at Westminister

DePaul’s newest Study Abroad Program in London provides students from almost any major discipline many options for studying and interning in one of Europe’s great cities. Students enroll in classes at the University of Westminster, selecting the campus that serves their major. A popular feature of this program is the internship option. Westminster’s Business Experience and International Unit helps students find internships related to their interests or course of study.  These internships can provide real work experience, the challenge of adapting to a new working culture, and skills in intercultural communication and adaptability.

Students either enroll in four courses, each earning 6 DePaul credits or combine three courses worth 6 DePaul credits each with an internship that earns 12 DePaul credits. Thus the total credits earned for the program is 24 or 30.   Internship participants interested in earning an additional 4 credits may enroll in an on-line internship course through DePaul’s University Internship Program.  Depending on their work experience they can choose between ISP 250: You, Your Work and the World or ISP 350: Navigating the Changing Workplace.

The program includes excursions in and around London. Two day trips and two overnight trips are included, as well as a variety of immersion activities that may bring students to the theater, museums, a polo match, etc. In this way, students have an opportunity to combine their classroom learning with direct experience of British social life, arts and culture. Previous overnight trips have included Bath and Stonehenge, and York and Fountains Abbey. Daytrips have included Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford.

COURSES

Each course at Westminster is the equivalent of 6 DePaul credits. Students in the full curriculum option will enroll in four courses at Westminster and will receive a total of 24 DePaul credits.

Students participating in the internship option will register for a total of 30 DePaul credits, including 12 DePaul credits for the internship course and 18 DePaul credits for three additional courses.

Students who decide to take the internship route are advised to take more theory modules rather than practice modules. Practice modules may require more work out of class. We recommend that you carefully consider the impact the module will have on your time commitments, your performance in other modules, how it may interfere with the internship and your opportunity to experience London as fully as possible.

While the Study Abroad Program will do everything possible to expedite the process, we usually do not receive the overseas transcripts early enough for a June graduation conferral.

Internships

Westminster has placed students in unpaid internships with the following companies in the past:

  • Blackbaud Finance - A not-for-profit IT solutions company that provides other not-for-profits with software solutions.
  • CBS News
  • GE Captial - General Electric's financing unit.
  • Japanese Gallery / Soga Marketing
  • Myriad Global Media - a communications solutions company catering to the oil and gas industries.
  • Offices of Parliament Members
  • Parkers Fashion Group - a wholesale fashion agency specializing in branded women's clothing in the  middle to upper end of the market.
  • Smith and Monger - a public relations and marketing company.
  • Refugee Advice and Support Centre

To receive intership credit, students work 15-20 hours per week at their placements, take an internship course at Westminster, and are required to complete 3 hours of guided independent study each week.

Circumstances, such as an unexpected event abroad or a curriculum change at a host institution, may require DePaul University to make changes to the program. DePaul University reserves the right to cancel or alter programs and courses without notice.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

While in London, students will live in single dorm rooms. Housing is assigned by the host institution and will depend upon the course of study students select and which campus they’ll be attending. Meals are not provided in the dormitories. Kitchen facilities are available and students may purchase food from nearby grocers and restaurants and cafes.

EXPENSES

In addition to DePaul tuition for 24 or 30 credits, costs include a specific program fee. For updated information on specific program expenses, click here:

The fee covers housing, orientations, immersion activities, cell phone rental, airport transfer upon arrival, study abroad health insurance, and selected excursions.

Students must plan their budgets to cover airfare, meals, passport and visa fees, local transportation, books/supplies, and personal expenses.  Because students will likely be taking courses at multiple campuses, budgets need to be allocated accordingly to include commuting costs.

Program fees are based on actual costs of the prior year and projections for the current year. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it impossible to state a fixed cost. DePaul University reserves the right to adjust program fees without notice.

APPLICATION

Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA to participate in this program. To apply to this program, students must submit the following to the Study Abroad Program office:

  • A complete DePaul Study Abroad Program application form
  • Two (2) academic recommendation forms from faculty familiar with your academic work.
  • An official copy of your transcripts. At DePaul, these may be requested on Campus Connect in the Students section under Records and Registration.
