Studies in Japanese Language and Culture
Kyoto is home to some of Japan's most important World Heritage Sites such as the Ryoanji, Ninnaji and Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion) Temples, which are located right at the doorstep of Ritsumeikan University. It enjoys a harmonious blend of the ancient and the modern, thus giving students the unique opportunity to experience all aspects of Japanese society. By studying in the SKP at Ritsumeikan University, students are able to take advantage of the rich academic and cultural environment of this city, leading to a truly fruitful and memorable study experience in Japan.
The Study in Kyoto Program (SKP), offered at the Kinugasa Campus in Kyoto, brings together students interested in Japanese studies from around the world. It offers numerous courses in Japanese language and culture utilizing the extensive historical and cultural resources of the ancient city. Kyoto, the capital of Japan from 794 to 1868, is an ideal place for study, being a city with one of the highest concentrations of academic institutions in Japan. To cement this reputation, the "University Consortium of Kyoto" was established in 1998 as a vehicle to enhance mutual collaboration among universities and to strengthen ties between academia, industry and the local community. At present, 49 universities and colleges located in Kyoto and surrounding areas belong to this consortium, providing a shared course offering made available to the students of member institutions.
Students participating in this program during the Spring of their senior year should be aware that overseas grades may not receive their degree conferral until August. While the Study Abroad office will do everything they can to expedite the process, we usually do not receive the overseas transcripts early enough for a June graduation conferral.
Circumstances, such as an unexpected event abroad or a curriculum change at a host institution, may require DePaul University to make changes to the program. DePaul University reserves the right to cancel or alter programs and courses without notice.
Students stay in dormitories on campus which include private single rooms furnished with beds, linens, and desks, common toilets and baths. Free laundry facilities are also available. Both dormitories have a common lounge equipped with study materials, a TV and DVD/VCR.
In addition to DePaul tuition for the appropriate credits, costs include a specific program fee. For updated information on specific program expenses, click here:
For this program, the fee covers study abroad
insurance and orientations. Housing fees are paid directly to Ritsumeikan University. (Refer to Ristumeikan University Housing Guide for more details on housing cost.)
Students must plan their budgets to cover round trip airfare to/from the program site, on site transportation, meals, passport and visa fees, supplies, textbooks, and personal expenses.
Program fees are based on actual costs of the prior year and projections for the current year. Inflation and fluctuating exchange rates make it impossible to state a fixed cost. DePaul University reserves the right to adjust program fees without notice.
Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and completed at least Japanese 103 or demonstrated an equivalent language proficiency level to participate in this program. To apply to this program, students must submit the following to the Study Abroad Program office:
