El Salvador: Globalization, Human Rights, Violence and Social Justice

Using El Salvador as a case study, this program explores themes of violence, peace, globalization, development, human rights and justice.  While traveling, students learn about the civil war of the 1980's and 1990's between a military government and a revolutionary guerrilla force calling for socialist transformation.  Spending time at a convent and day care center, and hearing from guest speakers, students develop an awareness of migration, religion and war in El Salvador's recent history.  Upon their return, students use this new awareness and engage in service with immigrants from Central America and Mexico in Chicago.  This program model allows students to deepen their understanding of social conflict and encourages reflection on social justice.

*Note: This program will not be offered in December 2009.  Check back for updates on December 2010.
