Applying for Study Abroad

Application Requirements

To apply to a DePaul Study Abroad program, you will need to complete an application and explain why you want to study abroad, as well as what you hope to accomplish academically and personally in the program. Most application deadlines are four to six months prior to departure, so start planning early.

Application Due September 15

The First Year Abroad program is designed specifically for freshman students who wish to have their winter-quarter Focal Point course culminate in a study abroad experience to Ireland, Jordan or Mexico.  More information on our FY@ broad  programs may be found here. The following materials are needed to apply for a First Year DePaul Study Abroad Program:

Study Abroad Programs

For most programs, applicants should have sophomore, junior or senior status.  Students are expected to be in good academic standing with above average grades, usually a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Many language-intensive programs require that you have taken 1-2 quarters of the target language. Independence, initiative, and especially a readiness for studying and living abroad are required of all participants. Students are also required to complete an interview process before being admitted. You may participate in as many programs as your academic career and budget permit. The earlier you start to plan your study abroad experiences, the more opportunities you will have.

The following materials need to be submitted for a Term-Long or Short-term DePaul Study Abroad Program (does not apply for FY@Broad):

    • from two (2) faculty members familiar with your academic work.
  • A digital photo uploaded/attached to the application.
  • An official copy of your transcripts or a copy of your unofficial transcript (varies per program).
    • Transcripts are on Campus Connect in the Students section under Records and Registration.
    • Unofficial transcripts are on Campus Connect in the Students section under the same location.

*Due to changes in our program offerings this year, your study abroad program of interest may not be included in the drop-down menu of our online application. If this is the case, please type/handwrite the name of your program on the first page of the application form instead.

*Letters typed on Microsoft Word and sent as an email attachment or hard copy are also accepted, should the recommender have any trouble accessing the PDF recomendation form.

The requirements and pre-requisites to participate in DePaul study abroad programs vary from program to program and are specified in each program's literature.  For specific application requirements for each program:

CDM BRAZIL: Students applying for the CDM Brazil Program must fill out a different application form than the one listed above.  It can be found here.

Application Resources

The selection of a quality program that fits your needs is an important decision, worthy of a great deal of time and consideration.  Allow yourself the time to make this decision without the pressure of application deadlines and graduation requirements looming over your head.  The Study Abroad office offers advising for students who seek academic, financial, and general guidance in making their decision.  Open advising is also an opportunity for students to ask questions about the application process.  For information on walk-in advising hours and resources:

Also, students from other universities are welcome to apply for admission to the Study Abroad Program and are admitted to DePaul as non-degree seeking students. These students are held to the same eligibility requirements as DePaul students. Before applying to a DePaul Study Abroad program, consult with your home university or institution about transferring credit and securing financial aid. For further assistance, please contact the Study Abroad Program office.
