Although we encourage you to look at the DePaul University sponsored programs first, you may participate in ones that are not sponsored by DePaul. If you choose to either enroll directly into a host-country university or in a study abroad program sponsored by another U.S. college or university, you must be approved for transfer credit from your college and from the Study Abroad Program prior to your departure. If you are a College of Commerce student, you will need to work directly with Commerce Advising to have your transfer credit approved.
Due to DePaul’s senior residency requirement, you cannot have completed more than 132 quarter hours of credit to be approved for transfer credit. Check with your academic advisor to discuss restrictions pertaining to courses. Transfer Credit Approval forms are available from the Study Abroad Program or, if you are a College of Commerce student, from Commerce Advising.
The Study Abroad Program also offers non-DePaul program advising sessions for students who wish to discuss which non-DePaul program options may work best for them. For advising schedules and further information, click on the following link:
You should contact the program sponsor to discuss financial aid options available to you and any other special administrative requirements.

As a part of the visa application process, students going to studying abroad to certain countries, such as Italy, may be asked to provide a letter of enrollment from DePaul, certifying that they have permission from the university to go on a study abroad program.
In order to receive a letter of enrollment on DePaul University letterhead from the Registrar's office indicating that you are a full time, degree-seeking undergraduate student and that you have permission from DePaul to participate in the program:
This entire process can take around 4 weeks, so please PLAN AHEAD accordingly to avoid possible problems with consulate appointments. The transfer credit approval request form requires that you meet with an advisor in your academic department, as well as with someone in Study Abroad. Your college will then take some time to determine the transferability of your credits from the university issuing credit, as well as how they will transfer (e.g. Chinese History transfers to a 200-level History course.)
Also, upon submission of all the listed items, you will need to fill out a release form, available at DePaul Central, which states that you give permission to release all of this information. The actual letter will then be given to you by the Registrar's office.
Students from other universities are welcome to apply for admission to the Study Abroad Program and are admitted to DePaul as non-degree seeking students. These students are held to the same eligibility requirements as DePaul students.
Before applying to a DePaul Study Abroad program, consult with your home university or institution about transferring credit and securing financial aid. For further assistance, please contact the Study Abroad Program office.
If you are planning on participating in a non-DePaul program which lasts for more than three quarters or more, there is an option for you to take a non-credit course (ISP 050) which will allow you to keep your status as an active DePaul student. Otherwise, you will have to re-enroll at DePaul as a transfer student after your return and pay admission fees- an unnecessary and time-consuming process. If you are currently on a non-DePaul program or will be participating on one that will be over at least a year long, you need only enroll in ISP 050 once throughout your time abroad in order to secure your status as a current DePaul student. To be enrolled in this course, please contact a Study Abroad advisor in the Study Abroad Program office.
